We live lives based upon selected fictions. Our view of reality os conditioned by out position in space and time – not by our personalities as we like to think. Thus every interpretation of reality is based upon a unique position. Two paces east or west and the whole picture is changed.
Laurence Durrell.

From the very first time my father got me in the path of Ayahuasca, more than eighteen years ago, many people ask me what Ayahuasca means to me.

It is a teacher, mother, doctor, for she teaches, guides and heals us. I’ve been drinking ayahuasca for a very long time, for countless number of times, however I can’t know it all and in fact, I don’t know anything, I am still learning everyday from the teacher that teaches me the things I need to learn and not the other way arround. Every experience with Ayahuasca is very different from the other. I believe that everything, from the smallest and ephemeral thing to the most trascendental are a complete teaching.

Drinking Ayahuasca is a communion to me, a communion that opens the doors to our own reality and to others we are not used to; the notion of space and time are lost during this period. The visions and effects we experience in an Ayahuasca ceremony are processes of learning. When we ask with will, patiente, faith and respect, Ayahuasca protects us and teaches us, she shows us the origins of our ailments. This is the virtue and wisdom held in Ayahuasca. She teaches you what you need, she will heal in you what needs to be cured, she guides you through wherever it is yo need to go.

The things you live in the magical world of Ayahuasca are real, as real as the world we walk through most of our time. In the Ayahuasca world our senses are sharpened so that we can understand our own nature; by entering this realm we can talk to our inner selves an walk other dimensions that are also useful as teachers and guides.

The things that happen in the intimacy of our being under the effects of Ayahuasca are a process of purification for our minds, spirits and bodies; we contact ourselves through a mirror, and this way we assume the responsability we have with ourselves. Transformation can occur during this process.

From the experience I have acquired through the years, I say that this is not about understanding or explaining an Ayuahuasca experience, for the most we try to understand the less we learn. I believe that the experiences in altered states of conscience are not meant to be explained, but to be felt within ourselves. My experiences with Ayahuasca have been diverse. I got the chance of understanding my first Ayahuasca vision after eight years. Everything experienced in an Ayahuasca ceremony has something to teach. In other words: the search of knowledge from a vision, however, in many of my experiences I did not have any kind of visions whatsoever, no extraordinary trips… but despite that Mother Ayahuasca has taught me many things. An spiritual experience gives life to our feelings and opens our hearts, so that we can learn to discover ourselves.

Before I can finnish with these paragraphs, I must mention that for us to drink Ayahuasca, we need to be prepared at a physical, mental and spiritual level. We need discipline, and every discipline requires work, that way we will receive the magic of Ayahuasca in our bodies. We need to get rid of some habits to get into this other world. The Teacher Ayahuasca demands a purified body. I would like to know further details, but I will stop here to continue these paragraphs in other ocation.

It is a common belief in the Amazon that the doctor, mother and teacher Ayahuasca embodies the spirit of nature. It is told that in the western flow of the Amazon basin 700 different ways of cooking Ayahuasca can be found; therefore each of these villages have different ways of understanding her. This ancient knowledge is entangled to the collective conscience of these groups and it is also passed on by one generation to the next. According to researchers of the Amazon, the use of Ayahuasca is approximately 500 years old.

Shamanism and Ayahuasca are a disciplined way of obtaining health, power and personal growth. We need to know that Ayahuasca is not limited to work in one realm only, but in a magical world, in a dimension in which we receive the help from the spirits: a realm full of beauty and harmony. The only thing we need is a mind free of prejudice. This magical-religious dimension works from this point of view: that the irrational things are rational, and that the invisible things are visible.

How to cook Ayahuasca?

Every Amazon Shaman has his own way of cooking Ayahuasca. They usually say that it is her who tells them how to cook it, thanks to the visions they have during the sessions.

This is one way of preparing it:

Collect the Vine (Banisteriopsis Caapi) and the leaves of the bush called Chacruna (Psychotria Viridis). These two plants must be collected in a full moon date, early in the morning for a fasting person. 22 pounds of Ayahuasca are needed. Peel off the bark and then grind it so the vine gets softer, that way it will cook faster. 2 pounds of Chacruna are added; you could also add some leafs of Datura spp (known as Floripondio or Toé in the Amazon), coca leaves, or tobacco. Boil the substance using 50 liters of water. The process of cooking is enhanced by the Shamanic chants, known as Icaros in the Amazon, and tobacco smoke. Both of these procedures invocate the spirit of Ayahuasca and the spirits of nature and, as told by Shamans, Icaros add power to the beverage.

The 50 liters of water evaporate, leaving us 2 liters of Ayahuasca. The beverage must have a viscous contexture and a red-ocher color.

How to use Ayahuasca?

Ayahuasca is used as medicine, purifier and teacher. We call her Doctor because she heals, Teacher because she teaches and Mother because she guides. She grants Knowledge and Vision.

The Medicinal Properties of Ayahuasca are not only spiritual, but physical. Requirements need to be met in order to drink Ayahuasca; such as mental, physical, emotional and spiritual preparation. A proper diet is very important; fast for 24 hours before the ceremony, the stomach needs to be empty, for vomiting during a session is a common thing. Do not ingest liquor, drugs, spicy food, sexual abstention for seven days before the session is also required.

Ayahuasca will take you into her magical world. She will give you whatever it is she needs to give you, she will teach you whatever it is she needs to teach you, she will heal in you whatever it is she needs to heal in you. Ayahuasca is not about a mere chemical relation, but a deep magical one. In order to understand Ayahuasca we need to learn to feel her magical dimension by, as told by Shamans, using our hearts and not our heads. Every experience with Ayahuasca is different to others.

No one has ever died after drinking Ayahuasca, but caution is needed; we cannot allow  ourselves to be led astray by curiosity or the exaggerated virtues that some others grant to these shamanic arts, for every one of us will have a unique experience with Ayahuasca.

Ayahuasca is not a fugitive pleasure, seedless venture or adventure for Wiracochas.

Ayahuasca is a door, not to escape, but to enter this and other natures, to walk the endless provinces of night.

The light of Ayahuasca does not explain things, but reveals misteries.

Ayahuasca irrigates the unknown lands, and that’s her way of enlightening.

Whenever needed, Ayahuasca is the edge of a Stone knife.

Separates the body of its soul

If a soul is sick, Ayahuasca rids it of its shell, denies the contact with it.

Ayahuasca shoes the origin and location of the sickness, and will whisper to us the chants and Icaros needed to expel it.

And if a body is sick, Ayahuasca does the same.

She separates the body from its soul, so it cannot rot the soul.

She also shows the roots that connect the spiritual body with the material soul: distant, separated, until flesh can reincarnate in the very heart of health.

And all of that, that is apparently nothing, is everything.

There are gifts, powers, commands, roots, and beverages.

Barks that are useful for this and that, certain types of rain that can be drunk and certain kinds of stones

How to use and prepare them? Ayahuasca knows.

This is what she teaches us, but only if the body and soul deserve it

Every time you know how to call Ayahuasca, with urgency and respect, there is no mistake, no miracle, not before, not after Ayahuasca.

There are things we deserve to know, there are things we deserve to ignore. Everything is about deserving.

Every time you call on Ayahuasca, and done correctly, everything is possible.

For even the ashes turn into water when a thirsty man kisses them

Ayahuasca, the vine of the Skies

She took me to her magical world, gave me what she had to give me. She taught me what I needed and Healed in me what needed to be healed

Thanks to her I no longer understand this magical relationship, now I comprehend it
I’ve learned to feel its magnitude… not with my brain, but with my heart

Working together, without prejudice in my mind, in perspective; seeing the irrational as reasonable and visible the invisible.

From other dimensions I receive help, from other realms full of beauty and harmony. The mother, master, doctor, considered to be the spirit of nature, in harmony.

She introduced me to the God Chinini “all mighty, powerful spirit” endless source of the matter and spirituality, threes, the mythic palm trees of our origins, the elements: water – life bearer, air – with its movement, direction and strength, fire – source of heat, the earth and its members… and I humbly invocated the spirits of the forest and rivers; I found the love, the truth and faith. I managed to understand myself and existence itself… I made an astral journey with him, embrasing the Vine of the Skies, the same that you’ve lend me from your “parallel worlds”.

I am the spirit of Ayahuasca.

For the first time I show myself through the verb to call the attention of all the humans in earth, especially those who seek the light, so I can trascend beyond the Amazon. I show myself because I want to facilitate the energetic transformation Humanity is going throug right now, and because my survival is at stake; for my holy protectors of the Amazon have not understood the danger they expose me to by harvesting me so aggressively, without healing me with new crops.

I’m out of the jungle now, risking my own existence, so I can give myself to the purpose I was created for by the inner sun in every living thing. It is my job, in this historical moment, to contribute with the expansion of human conscience in a meaningful and definitive way, honoring the Universal Light that guides me.

For the first time, with the purpose created by my Shamans and with help of the media available, I can reach the whole planet and celebrate our cosmic existence. I live to show the harsh reality, and universal love to those who ask for it. I am the spirit of spirits. I work with a vibration that is superior to those of the spirits that are part of me; my rank is higher than Ayahuasca’s and Chakruna’s. The result of the mix between Ayahuasca and Chakruna is called Ayahuasca. Even though they name me after one of these plants, my healing magic does not come from any of those; my magic resides in the synergy created in that holy mix. Many years will pass until science deciphers how I work in the human conscience.

Science is amazed by my power, which does not come only from the DMT or Harmaline; Ayahuasca is a raw, bioelectric, non-industrially processed natural mix. This is the Spirit of Ayahuasca showing herself today; enlightening the people around us.

I thank all the Shamans that have made me part of them, and my protectors that take me and my teachings all over the world. I honor the Amazon tradition by using the name of Ayahuaca for linguistic purposes only, for I am the spirit of Yagé, Pilde, Dápa, Pandé, Hoasca, Kahiriama, Natema, Caapi, Mado, Ñucñu-huasca, Shimbaya-huasca Kamalampi, Punga-huasca, Rambi, Shuri, Nishi, Oni, Shillinto Natema, Mi-hi, Amarron-huasca, Inde-huasca, Shuri-fisopa, Shuri-oshinipa, Napi, y del Nepe.

The name Shaman is also used in a popular way, but it is the Taitas, Sinchis, Curacas, Payes, Yachas, Chais, Junes, Onayas, Murayas, Mutsarawas, y los Uwishin, we have to honor, for they are my protectors as well

The Ayahuasca Ceremonies take place during the night. People sit down and form a semi-circle to both sides of the Shaman. Once everything has been set up he stands up and the ceremony begins, the shaman creates an energetic circle with the smoke of Mapacho (green tobacco cigar), to protect the place from negative forces.

Once this has been done, the Shaman gets the Ayahuasca bottle and his ceremonial tools and puts them on the ground on a small carpet that actually is the Altar. He lights the Mapacho and starts singing Icaros. Then he holds the Ayahuasca bottle, opens it, holds some smoke in his mouth and, putting the bottle close to his chest, he blows the smoke into the bottle and covers it, so it won’t escape. He closes the bottle again and puts it aside.

Now it is time to wait, with the lights off and in silence, for Ayahuasca to work. It usually takes 20 minutes for the natives and 45 for the westerns. These effects are called “Mareación”.

Auka Machasca (Splendid Mareacion) por Pablo Amaringo

The Shaman is not completely active for the first minutes of the mareación, where visions are scarce. As time goes by, the Shaman guides the energy flow of the patients through the powerful Icaros.
The Shaman can increase or decrease the patient’s mareación at will. To do so, he uses different tools:
• Tobacco Smoke.
• Icaros.
• Florida Water.
• Camphor.
• Lemon.
• His Hands.
• The Shacapa (some sort of Rattle)

Some patients vomit during the ritual, other use the toilet, and other need the Shaman’s hands in specific places of their body where the sickness lies. With this, their bodies and emotions heal.
In the end the Shaman will call on the participants, they have to approach to him and he will make a “curación”. Curación means cleanse of the body, eliminating the negative energies in it so we can fill it with clean energy and seal it so it won’t go away.
The ceremony ends when all the participants have been cleansed and healed. The participants will not eat any kind of food up to 12 hours after the session, when they will eat grated onions with salt and lemon.

Shacapa: Bunch of tied leafs that the shaman shakes under a rythmic patter so he can manipúlate energies and set the rithm of the ceremony.
Florida Water: Perfume made of herbs, is used in the Amazon to cleanse the participant’s energy. Pour some of it in your hands and then rub it in your face, inhale the perfume’s essence as deep as you can, this helps with the mareación.
Camphor: Liquid made of Camphor disolved in alcohol. It is used as protection against evil energies and envy. The Shaman rubs the patient’s forehead with it.
Mareación: Ayahuasca increases and decreases the energy flow as waves that hit the shores and drag us to our visions. These waves are called Mareacion.

Information about Ayahuasca

Mother Ayahuasca is known under different names in the languages of the towns in the Amazon, such as Burawehiak (Harakmbut people), Kamarampi (Matsigenka), Oni (Shipibo), Nanten (Shuar) and Nixipae (Cashinahua), is a holy beverage. Not a “hallucinogen”. Mother, doctor and teacher ayahuasca comes from the amazonic jungle, is known and used in an ancestral way by the indigenous amazonic towns; which consider her the spirit of nature. It constitutes the foundation of spirituality, shamanism, traditional medicine, chamanism and indigenous Cosmo vision.

In Brazil is denominated Caapi, its scientific name. In Ecuador is called Natema; Yaje in Colombia, in the Andes and the Peruvian Amazon is called Ayahuasca.

This word is of Quechua origin and means “rope that unites the world of the living ones with the world of the spirits”. The literal translation would be Aya – Death/ Huasca – Rope or drunkenness, due to the dizziness it causes once one drinks it.

According to researches made in the Ecuatorian forest, the use of ayahuasca goes back to approximately 5.000 years; its knowledge survives in the magical – religious therapeutic field of the indigenous towns of the Amazon. Ayahuasca is used to make the connection with magical worlds, in the “expansion of the conscience”, since it has a spirit. Boiled with the leaves of a shrub called Chacruna (Psychotria viridis), datura, tobacco or coca and others can also be added to this beverage

There are 700 different ways of preparing Ayahuasca in the western slope of the amazon; every indigenous culture that inhabits this vast territory has its own way of conceiving Ayahuasca.

A sacred origin is given to ayahuasca, as well as to other plants. In some towns the origin is magical, “the story tells that the vine was a man from the sky and chacruna a beautiful woman from the earth, they got married and when they were about to die, they swore that together would always teach and cure the human beings, from the man’s grave the ayahuasca vine grew up and from the woman’s chakruna was born.

To some towns in the amazon, the ayahuasca vine “is the one that gives strength and chakruna the vision”. The beverage is drunk in purification, learning and healing ceremonies.

It is used to purify and to cure the spirit, the body, the mind and the emotions, which it takes us to a magic reality and to the state of superior conscience. Which show us realities that cannot be observed in an ordinary state of mind, which might be defined as the visible thing of what’s invisible and the rational thing of what’s irrational. From the connection with the magic and spiritual worlds to which ayahuasca connects us, conscience of the existence in its real meaning is acquired. It is a subliminal mystical experience, in which the conscious human being can modify the essence of his/her being.

In this context, the spirit of Ayahuasca heals us, teaches us and guides us so we can be able to face up to our difficulties. It allows to understand the harmony with Mother Nature, with other beings and the universe, as well as to reconcile with our own existence.

In the indigenous towns where ayahuasca is present it is said that: “you are going to see and understand with the spirit of ayahuasca”. Ayahuasca allows us to be aware of our spiritual potentialities.

Ceremonies and Rituals with Ayahuasca

Within the traditional contexts of use of ayahuasca, there are some requirements to fulfil in order to participate in a ceremony, those are: the diet that must be done before and after the consumption of the beverage; sexual abstinence and the no red meat diet, specially pig; you must also avoid alcoholic drinks seven days before the ritual. It is a process that implies the preparation of the body. Before ingesting ayahuasca, people should go through a process of purification that includes purges with plants and baths with aromatic plants, all of this with the purpose of purifying the mind, spirit and body and be ready for the ceremony.

The ceremonies of ayahuasca are carried out at night time, in Darkness the ceremonies cause a profound action in the body, mind, emotions and spirit, allowing us to confront and conquer our deepest fears, revitalizing vital energies and awake a superior level of conscience, all of this with the objective of opening ourselves to our “inner teacher”. The ceremony opens a relation   with spirituality that will last for ever.

The ingestion of Ayahuasca does not produce any kind of dependence; in fact it cures addictions to cocaine and alcohol. In Peru and Brazil there are other centers such as Takiwasi (San Martin – Peru) that treat that kind of dependencies with ayahuasca.

The magical plant, Ayahuasca, contains natural chemicals that provoke intense visions sharply sensitizing your senses. These and other effects drive the human conscience to new states of mind; inexplicable and mysterious but revealing and wonderful at the same time.

Ayahuasca as a medicine

Ayahuasca is used as a medicine so that the person can acquire awareness of his problems in their real significance. By planning the mystical experience of drinking ayahuasca, we can influence the very essence of our most intimate personality at will, perfecting it in at our favour. From the ayahuasca ceremonies it is also possible to conceive, the physical healing of some illnesses. It gives health and well-being, vitality and energy.

States provoked by ayahuasca.

Description of some of the mystical and spiritual states of connection provoked by teacher Ayahuasca:

Introspection and retrogression: when someone consumes ayahuasca the first thing that this person does is go through a reflection process on his/her own being, which is considered to be the examination of the soul (self-contemplation, recognition of the evolution of our being).

Retrogression: In the ayahuasca ceremony, a person can remember past phases in life, solve conflicts, which allows to get connected and to recognize you better. Past, forgotten or repressed experiences may return to the conscience as a real remembrance. That way the conflicts or tensions in our being are dissolved and a restructuration and healing of personality takes place.

Religious, magical experience

Ascension to the sky (to what’s divine) through a spiritual recognition

Transcendental experiences that increase the receptivity and mystical communion with the universe

Astral trip, peregrination of the soul, out of the physical body

Super cosmic conscience, Omniscient intellectual lighting

Expression of cerebral functions that is usually asleep, sharpening of the senses, intense memory, exhaustive analysis, development of the intuition.

Animation of extra sensory faculties

Telepathy, clairvoyance, precognitive manifestations and path to a divine context

Increase of the conscience.

Liberation of the spirit to raise the conscience and knowledge to higher levels and perspectives

Awareness of the body, its processes and movements, improved capability of relaxation, health and well being, vitality and energy; helps to get over interpersonal difficulties; acceptation, tolerance and respect for others; capability of giving and thanking; capability to trust others and to be honest; higher interpersonal conscience empathy and kindness; improves the relationships of family and couples. The connection with the magical dimension of ayahuasca and the experience was described as the contact with an “inner guide”.

These mental manifestations (introspection, regression, etc.) show randomly but with the preponderance of some of them. Every experience with ayahuasca is totally different of other.

Stages of the session of ayahuasca

Uncomfortable sensations vertigo nausea, fears and repressed paranoia

Solution to conflicts, peace and harmony

Deep reflection analysis and introspection

Vomit, diarrhea, sweat and other effects of purification can be present during a session that is the way teacher ayahuasca heals, teaches and guides. However, all of this process is relative; we can find what’s magical in only one session of ayahuasca, but we can also have several sessions with vomits and diarrhea without understanding or finding anything.

There is no good or bad session, but misunderstood. It is easier to drink ayahuasca; the hard thing is to understand what comes afterwards… The challenge of the person is understand the real meanings of the visions that ayahuasca shows us and be able of using this learning in our daily lives, therefore, we always recommend our clients that before having a session they should not have “marvellous and magical” expectations of the experiences of other people, because the result is not always the same since every person has their own experience with ayahuasca.

There is nothing more wrong than expecting something out of a session, since keeping your attention in a mental hope will not give room to whatever shows up at the moment of truth… Before having a ceremony it is recommended to keep a mind free of prejudices and fears and having the heart open. You must prepare yourself mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually.
